Modifying a Wall Structure

After you have your walls established the first thing you wanna do is right click the wall and a drop down menu will appear. Near the bottom of that menu it will say Element Properties(Red Ellipse)
After you click on the Element Properties the Instance Properties dialog box will open from here you can
set the base constraint, top constraint ,wall constraints, location line etc..(Black Ellipse)

click the Edit Type button on the top right portion of the Instance Properties box.(Red Ellipse)

The Type Properties dialog box will now appear and from here you can modify your wall wrapping, wall function and etc. On the right side of the Structure Parameter you will see the Edit button(Red Ellipse) this is where editing the wall structure is made. NOTE: You may want to Duplicate(Blue Ellipse) the wall depending if you use the wall over in the project, found on the top right side of the Type Properties dialog box.

After clicking the Edit button this will bring you to the Edit Assembly dialog box, this is where all the modification takes place of the wall structure including making sweeps, reveals, splitting the wall, default wall wrapping and also shows the current wall family, type and total thickness(Green Ellipses) from here we want to concentrate on the main box in the middle of the Assembly screen which is the Layers box(Red Ellipse) , here is where you want to add, subtract layers, add material and modify material thickness, determine your layer function which includes 6 boundaries to show weather your material is an exterior or interior material.

So lets start by using a generic wall thats 10' long and 6" wide with default height and add some Siding-Clapboard to it to keep it simple by clicking INSERT twice(red ellipse) that will give us 2 new layers in the layer box(Blue ellipse)

after that lets assign the 2 new layers a Finish function, the Exterior should have a Finish(1) and the Interior should have a Finish(2) function after that lets assign the materials and a thickness to both of them which will be Siding-Clapboard and a thickness of 1/2". After that you can assign a material and thickness to the main structure of the wall which would be a Wood-Stud Layer and thickness of 5", (I'm just using 5" so the total wall thickness is 6") after you get them all assigned it should look like this

Then just hit OK a couple of times to return to the wall, it doesn't appear that anything happened Right? WRONG click the View tab above the Ribbon and locate where the Thin Lines icon is and click it, it appears now that we can see our layers we just made, if its hard to see the wall just scroll in using the wheel on your mouse. It should look like this when your all done.
